All welders will be familiar with this topic, namely welding in windy conditions.

 

 

Wind is the welder’s best friend, so to speak, and you get the feeling that it always comes when you start the torch. Okay, now of course I’m talking about TIG welding.

This is the process we usually need when we are welding outside. Railings or other things. The problem here is of course extreme if the wind is too strong and blows away the protective glass. Why is that bad? We need inert gas, which forms a protective shell around the molten pool so that no oxygen can get in.

 

 

And the wind simply blows it away and so we have too much oxygen on our weld seam. As a result, we get pores and the weld seam does not look nice, nor does the

That’s why the electrode welding process is actually used outdoors in all weathers; it’s an absolute all-rounder and works in almost any weather. We’ve even done it in the rain.

 

 

 

 

 

 

You have the advantage that you do not need a shielding gas because the protective cover for the molten bath is on the electrode and thus forms the protective cover. This is very stable and firm and therefore not easily affected by wind.

 

 

 

 

So I can say that electrode welding is really great for outdoors. And that TIG and MAG welding can also be done outside, but is unfortunately not ideal in windy conditions.

 

 

 

 

A little tip for TIG welding outside: we always have a large piece of cardboard with us, which my colleague then holds so that I can weld undisturbed without the wind affecting our weld pool.
