Welding aluminum bicycle frames
Welding aluminum bicycle frames Summary
Aluminum bicycle frame welding - This is how we do it
One of the most popular sports is cycling. Unfortunately, there are always a few weak points on aluminum bike frames and I’ll explain what you can do about them.
Of course, you can buy a new frame or a new bike, but if it’s a cool bike and you don’t have a new frame, there is of course the option of having the aluminum bike frame welded.
But is that even possible? Does it even hold and does it make sense?
I can tell you that the whole thing makes sense. We practice that often. It’s always almost the same places, either on the seatpost or on the swingarm, so we’ve really repaired a lot of things. So we can say that a lot is possible.

Welding bicycle frames: What to consider
It is always important to return the whole thing to its original starting position. Of course only if it is already completely torn off and then I think there is always a reason why it tears, so I try to make it more stable than before.
Here we have two options: either a reinforcement tube can be inserted into the pipe and welded or a reinforcement plate can be placed on the outside. In addition, I weld two or three layers, i.e. one deep weld seam and 2-3 parallel weld seams on top of that.
Our experience with this has been extremely good to date and the things hold up really well. So if you have a problem like this, feel free to contact us and if you want to see more about it or need tips, just take a look at my YouTube channel. I also made a video about it.
Which parts of the chassis do we weld?
Basically, there are usually two weak points, one is the swingarm and the other is the top below the seat post attachment.
These are the places that most often occur and break on the bicycle frame. which can also be welded without hesitation. We usually weld the whole thing in several layers to give it more stability.
We usually also weld a reinforcing plate into the profile of the rear wheel swingarm. Always just in case X. I also always recommend repainting the area afterwards because if you have a crack again, you will see it perfectly.
In general, I would always recommend checking the bike after every ride and making sure that everything is in order at the weld seams. Especially if you are traveling in extreme or off-road conditions.
Now we come to the part that I will definitely not weld and that is the front of the head tube. It would certainly hold and work, but this area is just too dangerous for me to weld on.
How well does a welded seam hold on the bike frame
There are different ways to weld a bicycle frame. there is the warm from hardening or the cold from hardening.
We use the cold hardening variant with a special filler material, namely ALmG 4.5 MNZR. This filler material is very special and unfortunately also very expensive, but it has better strength and is effective against hot cracks.
Of course, it is also important that all other components on the bike are optimal. This means that if, for example, the swingarm of a bicycle breaks, it may also be because the shock has not been serviced for a long time and therefore the power transmission goes to the frame and not to the shock.
That’s why I would always say that several factors play a role here. In addition, when we weld a bicycle frame, we weld the whole thing in several layers to reinforce it.
