Flame spraying - what is it?
Flame spraying Summary
Flame spraying - what is it?
Flame spraying is the oldest method of thermal spray technology. Due to the fuel gas-oxygen flame as a heat source, only low-melting metals and alloys can be processed.
By using an acetylene-oxygen mixture, the temperature at the gun muzzle is around 3100 °C. The component temperature during the coating process is 180 °C and is significantly reduced by additional special cooling measures in order to avoid structural changes in the base material and distortion of the component.
What flame spraying methods are available?
Plasma spraying, wire flame spraying, arc wire spraying (Libo), powder flame spraying, high velocity oxy-fuel spraying (HVOF/HVAF) and arc wire spraying (Libo)
Differences between welding/spraying
Mixing with base material
Syringes:
No mixing up,
but max. Diffusion zone
With all the advantages and disadvantages:
– Heat input
– Adhesive tensile strength
– Porosity
– Coating thickness
– Coating properties – Component load-bearing capacity
Which carrier gas is best suited for flame spraying
You normally need acetylene and oxygen for oxyfuel welding or flame cutting.
However, the special torch or torch gun is also important for this. I use it to manually decide how much of the metal powder to add and when.
Flame spraying the exhaust? This is important to note!
It is important that you have the right metal powder for the torch gun. During flame spraying, the whole thing is first made to glow before the metal powder is applied.
