Is it possible to weld magnesium castings
Greetings from Schweißfan,
Is it possible to weld magnesium castings
The question today is, is it possible to weld cast magnesium?
I can tell you a lot about this, because I have been dealing with this topic for several years. Perhaps briefly about me, who I am and what we do. So my company is called -Alu Löffel-, we have specialized in repair welding
in different areas.
Basically, we have started to offer repair welding in the aluminum area cast aluminum magnesium was now a bit more tedious. But of course also in other areas such as steel, cast steel, stainless steel and titanium.
Magnesium alloys have also been added in the last year and a half. The big problem we had here was that we couldn’t get a suitable filler material. Now it finally works because we have the right filler material.
Unfortunately, it was also difficult for us to get information on the subject because there is simply no real information on the subject anywhere. That’s why I’m now in the process of getting some information out.
So in principle you can definitely weld it, that’s very important.
It can be welded in a similar way to cast aluminum. Of course, the weld pool etc. is slightly different, but if you can already weld cast aluminum, you have a very good basic requirement.
Of course, most people don’t even know what material their component is made of, so here are a few examples where aluminum magnesium alloys are used.
For example, in motocross and enduro the engine side covers are made of magnesium alloy. In the past, a lot of magnesium alloy was used in the VW Beetle and the VW T1, or as you might call a Bulli.
Especially, of course, in the area where there are simply no new parts to buy and that is why it is all the better and we are extremely pleased that we can now help our customers to repair these parts.
So let me summarize briefly: yes, magnesium castings can be welded. We have been dealing with this topic for over a year now and do it almost weekly in our workshop for our customers. So, if you ever need support in this area, feel free to get in touch with us. Another big advantage is that we sell the filler material in our store.
It is important to protect yourself from welding fumes, which are very harmful to your health. It is very easy to ventilate the room where you sweat well and also with a face mask or fresh air helmet.
In our store you will even find individual rods and not the usual five kilos, which is of course extremely high for one or two welds. We’ll include our store link and if you want to see the whole thing in video form, take a look at our YouTube channel below, where you can see exactly how to weld magnesium.
