Gray cast iron welding TIG

Can gray cast iron be TIG welded?

When it comes to topics such as gray cast iron welding, there are always a lot of opinions and statements and everyone has different experiences and therefore there are different statements on the subject.

My experience is based on about six years of repair welding in the field of gray cast iron and cast steel.

Of course, we have already been able to try out and test a lot here and have the great advantage of working together with Böhler Welding. Böhler manufactures its own filler materials and also has an application center where we have already been on site.

We also have the advantage of being in regular contact with one of the company’s application engineers if we have any questions.

Then, of course, a lot of experience comes together and you can exchange ideas, which is always extremely important for us in this area.

In principle, gray cast iron can also be welded with TIG in certain areas, but in my experience, if I look at it as a percentage, we now almost only weld it with electrodes.

Unfortunately, we at WIG have found that it doesn’t always work. Of course, there are now things like a gray cast iron cylinder, where we have to weld a cooling fin, which is best if it is very delicate and of course this is best done using the TIG welding process.

As I said, we tested this and in many cases it worked, but there were also areas where it didn’t work.

We weld here with a pure nickel electrode, which works extremely well with gray cast iron. In addition, you need a hammer to counter-knock the tension, the whole thing must be welded as cold as possible, i.e. really only piece by piece.
