Tig welding welding thin sheet metal to thick sheet metal
Greetings from Schweißfan,
Tig welding welding thin sheet metal to thick sheet metal
What is the best way to weld thin and thick aluminum sheets together?
Of course, there are a few tips and tricks on how to make the whole thing easier. It is clear that the thick material needs more heat than the thin sheet. For this reason, I always recommend holding the burner so that you melt the thick metal sheet first. Once this has happened, slowly approach the thin sheet, melt the thin one and add the filler material.
It may sound easier than it is, but ultimately that’s exactly the tip. Of course, it is important to hold the torch and have a clean and tidy tungsten electrode so that you can melt the material exactly where you want it. As I said, start on the thick sheet and then slowly work towards the thin one.
For basting such sheets, I recommend that you use a little more temperature and basting on the outside of the edges and then using the same principle as I described above.
When you start welding through, I recommend that you go to your stapler and make it a little wider at the edge so that when you start there, it doesn’t come loose again and that’s exactly where you start welding. Melt exactly the first spot again and slowly work your way across the gap to the end, always trying to be a little more on the thicker side of the sheet with the torch. (Pay attention to burner position)
Take some time for this, you can use 2-3 practice sheets for something like this, but you will notice that it gets better and better. For an even better illustration, I also have a video, I’ll add the link below. Have a look at it, there you can see everything with picture and sound how I do it.
If you need the equipment, you can start welding straight away!
