New plates must be fitted. All of this can mean repairs. Which of course is a big challenge for someone who has no experience in aluminum welding. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not possible to do all the things I’ve described here.

Here are a few tips up front: the most important thing when welding aluminum, especially used or old aluminum, is cleanliness. What I recommend here is a hot air dryer, a wire brush, acetone and a cloth so that you can remove the dirt really well and prepare it perfectly for welding!

 

 

 

 

 

For normal aluminum, I would simply recommend ALMG5 as the welding rod.

 

 

 

 

 

 

When welding aluminum, I always think that the green tungsten electrode works best, if you weld up to 220 A approximately, a 2.4 is also sufficient. Anything above that I would take a 3.2.

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you have pitting, try not to weld it at all, in my experience the quickest way is to cut out the area and fit a new plate. You will see that you will be able to seal the tank more quickly at this point, which is also the aim.
