Car manifold leaking
Welding fan I salute you
Car manifold leaking
You have a problem with your car manifold, it’s leaking and you’re not sure how to fix it. Don’t worry, there are definitely one or two tried and tested methods that we use here in our workshop every day.
The first method is normal welding. We use the electrofusion welding process with special electrodes such as the pure nickel electrode or the Nive, depending on whether it is a cast steel or gray cast iron elbow. Both variants work very well and are the most common in our company.
The crack in the manifold causing the leak is milled open. Often you can see the crack in a certain optical length, let’s say 3 cm from start to finish. We always mill the crack 1 cm longer on both sides because you often cannot see the crack visually until the end. Then we take the respective electrode and weld the whole thing, usually with the pure nickel electrode, piece by piece. About 10 to 20 mm at a time to keep the heat low.
welding process. We knock out the tension with a hammer and let the whole thing cool down, and we do this step by step.
The second method we have is flame spraying. This also works very well and we have often used it in our workshop. We normally only use this method if the others do not work. If the alloy is unknown or is very difficult to weld. The procedure is similar here. We mill the crack completely open and then use oxy-acetylene with metal powder to spray the material on.
I have also recorded a YouTube video for both methods, which I have linked below. Take a look at it. If you need help with such a repair, we are here for you. You can contact us or if you want to do it yourself, we have the necessary tools in our store so that you can repair it yourself at home.
