Why preheat welding?

Greetings

Why preheat welding?

So why should you preheat before welding?

The first point why you should preheat is that the material of the part you want to weld is very strong and the power of the welding machine is not sufficient to melt it.

Then you should not hold the burner on it for ages until the material melts.

Then you can bring the part up to the right temperature and welding will be quicker and easier.

Then it depends on what you want to weld, because there are of course differences between the various welding processes and materials.

When welding steel, for example, stresses occur in the material in the area of the weld seam.

This can then lead to cracks, and preheating can reduce the welding stresses very well.

It is often said that aluminum should be preheated, which I cannot confirm, nor do the professionals.

If you have the right equipment and a welding machine with plenty of power, you don’t need to preheat. As I wrote at the beginning, it always depends on the material thickness and of course you can start welding faster,

when it is slightly heated, but since my welding machine has 300 A, I very rarely have to preheat it.

you can use this for preheating
