This blog is about welding bicycle frames– can you do it and what is the best way to do it?

 

 

 

We weld 95% aluminum and have acquired a great deal of experience in the field of aluminum over the last nine years. We use a special filler material, AlMG4.5 MGZR, for welding frames and have welded and repaired many bicycle frames over the years. Our aim is always to weld at least two layers, i.e. we tack weld or mill the bicycle frame so that we can weld a deep root. Then I always weld a second layer on top using the pendulum welding process.

 

 

 

But before we weld, we always check what the problem was in the first place! There is usually some tension in the frame or there is an area that is under high stress.

 

 

Often you first have to make sure that you get the tension out of the frame part.

 

 

As protection and additional reinforcement, we often insert a profile into the frame tube, which is also specially welded. Then, as explained in step one, a root is welded and another pendulum seam is welded over the top.

 

If we ever have the case that we cannot insert a profile into the frame tube, we will see how we can perhaps insert an additional gusset plate from the outside.

 

So to answer the question again, in principle it is possible to weld bicycle frames and we have often done this in practice. No matter whether it was an aluminum frame, steel frame or a chrome molybdenum frame.
